Field Trip Report From Last Year: June 14, 2003

Page 1: Introduction

The first annual "Search for Noids, Pods and Zoas" field trip was a big success. (June 14, 2003) This new annual event is open to the public and advertised in the local papers and other media. The event is in memory of the late Hank and Laura Barton, long time members of the Dry Dredgers, who have contributed so much to the group over the years. It is the brain child of their daughter, Jan, who poured her heart and soul into planning this event and investing an impressive amount of time and money to ensure its success. The Dry Dredgers are forever grateful to Jan for all she has done.

The "Search for Noids, Pods and Zoas" was a family outing, aimed at the young paleontologist in all of us. The event educated youth on Cincinnati's rich fossil resources to widen their recreational horizons, while inspiring them to advance themselves into amateur and professional Paleontology.

This young Paleontologist found a very nice gastropod (snail).

But most of all....it was FUN!!! There were free tee shirts, free trilobite replicas, prizes and best of all, fossils to find!

We all gathered in the vacant parking lot of the former K-mart in Sharonville. A big green banner helped everyone know where to meet.

As parents and children gathered, Jan Barton began by explaining what we were going to do and handed out posters of the types of fossils we would find.

In addition to the posters, each child received a free plaster Flexicalymene trilobite! (shown below)

Jan Barton also gave everyone tee-shirts with "I Search for NOIDS, PODS and ZOAS" on them! (Shown below modeled by Jan Barton herself, with Dry Dredgers president, Jack Kallmeyer in the background.) That was really great. Thanks Jan.
