Introduction

Our hats are off to Dan Cooper, for a very successful and enjoyable fossil trip. Dan gave us a very nice tour of the Kope and Fairview formations as we caravanned down a Northern Kentucky byway stopping at selected road cuts. This was every fossil collectors dream. Imagine yourself on a road trip, enjoying the fall colors, which are at their peak today,  eyeing the blue-gray shale and rock exposed on the cuts in the rolling hills as you pass, wondering if any have good fossils. Imagine, now, you have an expert guide to tell you which cuts are the best, explaining the stratigraphy and the fossil fauna found along the way, stopping the car and helping you find the spots for the best  fossils.

That's the kind of field trip this was, with Dan Cooper as our guide.

It was a somewhat cool autumn Saturday with no rain. We had a full day of rain the day before, which may have contributed to the light turn out at the meeting. But the turn out at the field trip was good. We formed a 14 car caravan. We met in the Meijers parking lot in Alexandria, Kentucky. There, Dan gave us an idea where we were going, in case we got separated and some introductory information.

Within 10 minutes, we were off to our first of three sites we visited that day.

Here are some pictures of our trip.
