There was quite a bit happening at the January 2010 Dry Dredgers meeting.
Greg Courtney gave a beginner's class at 7:15 on the "Top
10 Best Fossil Finds of 2009". This follows his yearly schedule of
presenting non-Ordovician, non-Cincinnatian fossils in January.
Additionally, Holly Prochaska , head of UC’
s Geology-Math-Physics Library (located just down the hall from our meeting
room), had agreed to keep the library open until 8:00 PM. This allowed our
members to see what the library has to offer from 5 pm until the general meeting
started. Thanks Ms. Prochaska! We enjoyed it. There are some amazing collections
of Paleo books at this library. Many are rare or cannot be found any place else.
Then as 8 pm approached, everyone gathered in the general
meeting room (201 Braunstein Hall, UC). There was
time before the meeting to browse more books and literature people brought.
First our president, Jack Kallmeyer, made general
announcements. Then he showed us the door prizes (nice ones) and passed around
the signup sheet for the drawing.
Then the professional each had their turn to stand and make announcements for their respective institutions (Univ of Cincinnati, The Cincinnati Museum Center and The College of Mount St. Joseph).
Next, our Field Trip chair, Bob Bross, spoke for a couple
minutes on upcoming field trips.
Once everyone had signed up for the door prize drawings, Jack
drew numbers and the winners paraded to the front to select their prize.
Finally, it was time for our Vice President, Rich Fuches to
introduce the guest speakers.
John Tate (Treasurer) and Greg Hand (bulletin editor),
presented a review of those books that are essential for Cincinnati fossil
collectors. It was very informative and spoke directing to the starting fossil
collector and which books they should get first, second and third.
After the meeting there was "show and tell" for the
fossils members brought to show and/or get identified. Fossil books were also
shared.
