Bill Heimbrock gave the beginner's class this month on
"Fossils by Formations;" an introduction to the formations of the
Cincinnatian Series. Bill explained how fossils can be used to help identify the
formation while, at the same time, the formation can be used to help identify
your fossil.

Next, the general meeting began, presided by Jack Kallmeyer.

As part of the meeting, the professional members of the group
stand and say what's going on in their respective organizations and make
announcements.

At the January meeting, as is true for most meetings, there
were door prizes awarded by lottery. These prizes include books, fossils and
anything else a member donates to give away, such as boomerangs.

The next part of the meeting is when Vice President Rich Fuchs
announces the guest speaker.

This month, the guest speaker was our very own Dr. Brenda
Hanke of the Cincinnati Museum Center, speaking on transitional fossils and
their role in substantiating the facts of evolution.

This meeting had another key note. One of our most
knowledgeable amateur members, Steve Felton, was named by Discover Magazine as
one of the 50 most important, influential and promising people in science! And
these were mostly professional scientists! Congratulations, Steve. We are very
proud to have you amonst our ranks of the Dry Dredgers.

After the formal part of the meeting, there was plenty of time
to chat with fellow members. As seen in the picture below, this includes book
signings.

Other members had notable accomplishments to discuss as well.
This young Dry Dredger was recognized in a local paper for her excellent
project.

The time after the general meeting is where you can get your
fossils identified.

And usually someone volunteers to bring some refreshments for
everyone.
![]()
![]()
But mostly, it's a time for talking about fossils and showing
off your fossil finds.

That's all for this meeting. Thanks, Ron, for taking the photos.
