Dry Dredgers Meeting
February 23, 2007

The February meeting was a memorable one. We had a big attendance and we had many distinguished guests, such as Greg Schumacher of the Ohio Geological Survey.

It was my turn (Bill Heimbrock) to give the Beginner's Class 45 mins before the general meeting. My topic was "Fossils By Formation." This is the second part of a two part presentation, since 45 mins is not enough time. This one covered the Richmondian Stage.

Jack Kallmeyer presided over the meeting, as usual. Here are a couple of pictures of Jack pulling numbers for the door prizes and the members picking up their prize.

After announcements from the professional paleontologists in the group and from Jack,  Greg Schumacher, our feature speaker, took the floor with his talk, "Morgan's Raiders and the Battle of Buffington Island: geology's role in the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat." Greg contended that Brig. Gen. John Hunt Morgan was defeated in leading the Confederate cavalry in a deep incursion into the Northern states of Indiana and Ohio during the American Civil War (1863), largely because the rough Ohio terrain, described in Greg's presentation, slowed Morgan down. Greg gave us a Geology lesson in a way that made it interesting and educational.

Some of us took notes.

After the feature presentation, it was fossil "show and tell" time. Dr. Dave Meyer helped a member project on the screen a fantastic slab of Ectenocrinus.

Cindy brought in her computer-microscope and gave interesting demonstrations of capturing fossil images.

Lot of members brought in their fossil collections to show, as these pictures below illustrate.
