We had a good turnout for the January meeting. There was no parking problems and everyone came.
At 7:15 we had our beginners class, led by Education Chair
Greg Courtney.
Jack Kallmeyer presided over the general meeting, which began
about 8:10 pm. There were lots of fossil door prizes and all the professional
Paleontologists/Geologists in our group were there to tell us what's going on at
UC, the
Cincinnati
Museum of Natural History and Science, Mount Saint Joseph and
other nearby colleges.
Next came the feature presentation, for which the speaker was
our Vice President, Rich Fuchs. He gave us an update on the studies of Worm
Jaws, also known as Scolecodonts.
Rich gave us some of the history behind the naming of these
microfossils. He explained that whereas individual work jaw fossils are common
in our Cincinnati rocks, complete apertures are rare and only now beginning to
be found locally. Complete apertures are helpful in the renaming of worm jaw
specimens and we are living in exciting times for this development.
We Dry Dredgers have a unique opportunity to advance the
knowledge of Scolecodonts by finding more complete apertures in the rocks we
examine.
After the feature presentation came "show and tell." This is where we get to show off the fossils we've found recently and get expert opinions and identifications.
Ron Fine was on hand with his recent finds.
All the professionals kept busy talking with members,
answering questions and helping to solve our mysteries.

Keegan, Greg's son, was there with a recent diorama he has
made.

Grad students from UC rubbed elbows with the Museum Center
Curators.
And even I got to reunite with friends made at previous field
trips. (I'm normally quite shy.)
That's it for this meeting. It was nice to see everyone there. See you at the next meeting, set for February 23rd.
