Page 2: Digging And Collecting

The start of the digging process is to remove the dirt and clay from above the desired layer. This overburden is removed with a shovel. Don and Dan were there to show us exactly where the layer we want is.

And Eureka! A prone Flexicalymene trilobite is found right away!

Next spikes are driven into the shale just below the layer that is to be examined for trilobites.
 

Then the spikes are pulled up to loosen the shale sheets above it.
